At its zenith in the 1st millennium AD, this was one of the largest cities in the Americas with over 100,000 inhabitants. Accompanied by your local guide you'll explore the magnificent Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, the Avenue of the Dead and the Temples of Quetzacoatl and the Butterflies.
Then we'll move on to the Shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe, the most visited religious site in Latin America. The Shrine was built in 1531 after a local peasant saw a vision of a girl surrounded by light, asking that a church be built in her honour. She identified herself as the Virgin Mary and left an image of herself imprinted miraculously on his peasant cloak. The shrine itself is a wonderful example of Spanish Baroque Art and is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Roman Catholics in the world.
Finish the visit with a tour of Tlatelolco, an archaeological zone that holds great importance to Mexican history, as being once part of the capital of the Aztec Empire. Visit the Plaza de Las Tres Cultures, ("Square of the Three Cultures") where you can admire the combination of architectural influences from three different eras as well as the ruins of Aztec pyramids, the remains of a former Franciscan convent and more contemporary and modern buildings.
